The text of U.S. Army Pfc. Bradley Manning’s statement sent to president Obama. The text of this letter was read by defense attorney David Coombs following Manning’s sentencing on August 20.
The decisions that I made in 2010 were made out of a concern for my country and the world that we live in. Since the tragic events of 9/11, our country has been at war. We’ve been at war with an enemy that chooses not to meet us on any traditional battlefield, and due to this fact we’ve had to alter our methods of combating the risks posed to us and our way of life.
지난 2010년도에 행했던 나의 결정은 나의 조국인 미국과 내가 살고있는 지구의 평화를 위한 염려에서 출발한 것이었다. 비극적인 911사건이 발생한 후로, 우리나라는 전쟁의 소용돌이 속에서 이제껏 살아왔다. 우리는 전통적인 방식의 전쟁수행 방식으로 전쟁을 하고자 하지 않은 적들을 상대로 우리들에게 다가왔던 위협을 제거하고 우리들의 삶을 보호하기 위해서 우리 역시 그간의 전쟁수행 방식과는 다른 전쟁을 해야 했다.
I initially agreed with these methods and chose to volunteer to help defend my country. It was not until I was in Iraq and reading secret military reports on a daily basis that I started to question the morality of what we were doing.
나 역시 이러한 조국의 전쟁수행방식에 동의하고 나의조국 미국을 방어하기 위해서 자발적으로 참전할 것을 선택하였다. 그러나, 내가 조국의 전쟁수행방식에 의문을 품고 미국의 도덕성에 의문의 자문을 하기 시작한 것은 내가 이랔에 파견된 후에 일일 군사기밀문서들을 읽기 시작하면서 고개를 들기 시작했다.
It was at this time I realized that (in) our efforts to meet the risk posed to us by the enemy, we have forgotten our humanity.
당시에, 나는 우리들에게 닥친 위협의 대상인 적들과 대면하는 과정에서 우리가 한 가지 망각한 것이 있음을 깨달았고 그것이 바로 인간성 이라는 것을 알았다.
We consciously elected to devalue human life both in Iraq and Afghanistan. When we engaged those that we perceived were the enemy, we sometimes killed innocent civilians. Whenever we killed innocent civilians, instead of accepting responsibility for our conduct, we elected to hide behind the veil of national security and classified information in order to avoid any public accountability.
우리들은 당시 고의적으로 이랔과 아프가니스탄 사람들의 생명을 경시하였다. 당시, 우리의 적이라 착각을 하였던 적들과 조우 했을 때에 적들이라 생각되던 그들 만을 사살한 것이 아니라 민간인들까지도 이유 없이 사살하였다. 우리가 무고한 민간일들을 살해 했을 때에도 우리들은 그러한 우리들의 범죄행위에 대한 책임감을 인정하기 보다는 지구 상 어느 언론 과의 마찰을 회피 하기 위해서 국가안보 와 기밀유지 라는 악법 뒤에 숨곤 했다.
In our zeal to kill the enemy, we internally debated the definition of torture. We held individuals at Guantanamo for years without due process. We inexplicably turned a blind eye to torture and executions by the Iraqi government. And we stomached countless other acts in the name of our war on terror.
우리들이 적들을 사살하느 과정에서 우리는 내부적으로 고문의 정의를 놓고 일대 논쟁을 벌였다. 우리가 적으로 지명했던 이들을 관타나모 감옥에서 아무런 법적 절차 없이 수 년 간을 구금시켰다. 알 수 없는 이유로 적들을 고문하면서 한 쪽 눈을 가렸으며 결국 이랔 정부를 사주하여 사형 하게끔 하였다.
Patriotism is often the cry extolled when morally questionable acts are advocated by those in power. When these cries of patriotism drown out any logically based dissension, it is usually the American soldier that is given the order to carry out some ill-conceived mission.
종종 도덕적 질문이 불거져 나왔을 때에 권력자에 의해서 찬양되었던 것이 바로 애국심에 호소하는 부르짖음 이었다. 이런 가당찮은 애국심에 기반한 부르짖음을 호소하는 경우는 몇 몇의 악의적인 발상의 임무를 수여받고 그 임무를 수행했던 미국병사들에게서 나오는 것이었다.
Our nation has had similar dark moments for the virtues of democracy — the Trail of Tears, the Dred Scott decision, McCarthyism, and the Japanese-American internment camps — to mention a few. I am confident that many of the actions since 9/11 will one day be viewed in a similar light.
우리의 조국인 미국 역시 민주주의의 덕목에 반하는 암울한 순간들이 있었는 그중 몇 가지를 예로 들라면--- 아메리칸 원주민들을 무자비하게 학살했던 눈물의 흔적의 시기, 미국 내의 흑인들은 법적인 그 어느 권한도 없다는 드래드 스코트 판결, 매카씨즘 그리고 일본출신 미국인의 수용소들 --- 이 바로 그들이다. 나는 단언컨데, 시간이 지난 미래 어느 시점에서 911 이후의 미국이 자행한 군사적 행위들이 위에서 열거한 부정의한 항목들과 동일한 조명을 받을 것이라는 것을 확신한다.
As the late Howard Zinn once said, “There is not a flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.”
보스톤 대학의 정치학 교수이었던 하워드 진 교수는 다음과 같이 적시 하였다. "그 어디에도 순진무고한 양민을 학살한 부끄러움을 덮을 수 있는 성조기는 없다."
I understand that my actions violated the law; I regret if my actions hurt anyone or harmed the United States. It was never my intent to hurt anyone. I only wanted to help people. When I chose to disclose classified information, I did so out of a love for my country and a sense of duty to others.
나는 나의 결정이 미국의 법을 위반 했다는 것을 인정한다. 만일, 나의 결정이 미국인들을 상처받게 했거나 위협 했다면 후회할 것이다. 나는 결코 미국인들을 상처주려고 한 것이 아니었다. 나는 오로지 사람들을 돕고자 했을 뿐이다. 당시, 내가 미국의 기밀문서들을 외부에 공개하고자 했던 것은 나의 조국 미국을 너무나도 사랑했었기 때문이며 인류를 향한 책임감을 느꼈기 때문이다.
If you deny my request for a pardon, I will serve my time knowing that sometimes you have to pay a heavy price to live in a free society.
만일, 오밤아 당신이 나의 석방을 거절 한다면, 나는 나의 여생을 자유가 보장되는 사회에서 삶을 살기 위해서는 종종 엄청난 시련을 격어야 한다는 것을 자각하며 복역할 것이다.
I will gladly pay that price if it means we could have a country that is truly conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all women and men are created equal.
만일, 나의 이러한 행동이 진정으로 남녀평등의 자유를 보장 받을 수 있는 국가를 위한 것이라면 기꺼이 나는 그 값을 치룰 것이다.
