We choose our joys and sorrows
long before we experience them.
우리가 겪고 있는 기쁨들과 슬픔들은
오래 전에 우리가 선택한 것들입니다.
Say not, 'I have found the truth,'
but rather, 'I have found a truth.'
나는 진리를 발견했다고 하지 마십시오.
그보다는 내가 작은 진리 하나를 알게 되었다고 하십시오.
You pray in your distress and in your need;
would that you might pray also in the fullness of your joy
and in your days of abundance.
우리는 우리가 뭔가를 필요로 하는 순간,
우리가 고통받고 있을 때뿐만 아니라

I have learned silence from the talkative,

The appearance of things change according to the emotions,
and thus we see magic and beauty in them,
while the magic and beauty are really in ourselves.
사물들의 모습은 느낌이나 감정에 따라 변하기에,

그들 속에 있는 아름다움과 마술을 볼 수 있습니다.

결코 도달할 수 없는 마음 속의 오아시스입니다.
Doubt is a pain
too lonely to know
that faith is his twin brother.
의심이란
너무나 외로워서
믿음이 자신의 쌍둥이 형제라는 것을
알고싶어 하는 고통입니다.

He who attributes to her the evils of society oppresses her.
He who thinks
her goodness is of his goodness and her evil of his evil
is shameless in his pretensions.
But he who accepts her as God made her does her justice."
여자들을 동정하며 여자를 얕보는 남자들이 있습니다.
여자들을 짓누르고 있는 사회악들을
여자들에게 전가하는 남자들도 있습니다.
그렇게 여자의 부드러운 신(神)적 속성을
자신의 것으로 여겨 여자를 소유하려 하거나
남자의 죄악에 속하는 것을 여자의 죄악으로 생각하는 남자는
허세에 빠져 부끄러움을 모르는 사람들입니다.
하지만 여자의 신적인 면을 인정하고 받아들이는 남자는
여자로 하여금 여성적인 정의를 실현하게 합니다.

우리의 가장 나쁜 결점은 우리가 지닌 선입관으로
다른 사람들의 결점들을 보는 것입니다.

진리는 영적(靈的)인 감응(感應)의 따님입니다.
분별하고 따지는 마음은 사람을 진리로부터 멀어지게 합니다.
"The just is close to the people's heart,
but the merciful is close to the heart of God."
정의는 사람들의 마음 가까이에 있는 것이지만
자비는 하느님의 마음 가까이에 있는 것입니다.
At ebb tide I wrote:
A line upon the sand
And gave it all my heart
And all my soul.
At flood tide I returned
to read what I had inscribed
And found my ignorance upon the shore.
썰물 때 나는 모래 위에 선 하나를 그려 두었습니다.
그리고 그것에 내 온 마음과 온 영혼을 주었습니다
밀물 때 나는 다시 돌아와 내가 쓴 것을 읽으려했지만
그 해변에서 나는 나의 무지에 대해 알았을 뿐입니다.
Keep me from the wisdom that does not weep,
and the philosophy that does not laugh,

the sage found naught in his hand save a handful of dirt,
and the magnate discovered nothing in his heart but a puff of mist.
한 현인이 어리석은 한 부자를 만나
교육과 부유함에 대해 토론하게 되었습니다.
그리고 나서 그들이 헤어졌을 때
현인의 손에는 한 줌의 더러움 밖에 남지 않았고
부자의 마음 속에는 훅 불면 사라지는 안개 외에는
아무 것도 발견할 수 없었습니다.
They say that if one understands himself,
he understands all people.
But I say to you,
when one loves people, he learn something about himself.
어떤 사람들은 말하기를
만일 한 사람이 자기 자신에 대해 알게 된다면
그 사람은 모든 사람을 이해하게 될 것이라고 합니다.
하지만 나는 그대들에게 말합니다.
한 사람이 세상의 모든 사람을 사랑할 때
