4. 시간과 생명에 대하여
And upon a day as they sat in the long shadows of the white poplars,
one spoke saying: "Master, I am afraid of time.
It passes over us and robs us of our youth,
and what does it give in return?"
그리고 어느 날
그들이 흰 백양나무의 긴 그늘 아래 앉아 있을 때 한 사람이 말했다.
"스승님, 저는 시간이 흘러가는 것이 두렵습니다.
시간은 우리를 스쳐가며 우리들로부터 젊음을 빼앗아 가지만
시간이 그 대가로 우리에게 주는 것이 무엇입니까?"
And he answered and said:
"Take up now a handful of good earth.
Do you find in it a seed, and perhaps a worm?
If your hand were spacious and enduring enough,
the seed might become a forest, and the worm a flock of angels.
And forget not that the years which turn seeds to forests,
and worms to angels, belong to this Now,
all of the years, this very Now.
그러자 알무스타파가 대답해 말했다.
"지금 한 줌의 좋은 흙을 집어보아라.
그대는 그 속에서 씨앗이나 벌레를 발견할 수 있는가?
만일 그대의 손이 충분히 넓고 인내력이 있다면
그대는 그 씨앗으로 숲을 일구어 낼 수도 있을 것이고
벌레를 천사들의 무리가 되도록 할 수도 있을 것이다.
그러나 씨앗들로 숲을 만들고 벌레들을 천사로 바꾸는 세월은
바로 지금 이 순간에 있다는 것을 잊지 말아야 하리라.
그리고 모든 세월 또한 바로 지금 이 순간에 속해 있음을...
"And what are the seasons of the years
save your own thoughts changing?
Spring is an awakening in your breast,
and summer but a recognition of your own fruitfulness.
Is not autumn the ancient in you singing a lullaby
to that which is still a child in your being?
And what, I ask you, is winter save sleep big
with the dreams of all the other seasons."
그리고 변화하는 그대 자신의 생각을 제외한다면
세월의 흐름이란 무엇이겠는가?
봄은 그대 가슴을 눈뜨게 하는 것이며,
여름은 그대 자신의 풍요로움의 인식에 지나지 않는 것이다.
그리고 가을은 그대의 존재 속에서 아직 미성숙한 부분에 대해
자장가를 불러주는 그대 속의 노인이 아닌가?
그리고 그대에게 묻나니 겨울이란
모든 다른 계절들의 꿈들을 잉태한 긴 잠이 아니라면 그 무엇이겠는가?
And the Mannus, the inquisitive disciple, looked about him
and he saw plants in flower cleaving unto the sycamore-tree.
And he said:
"Behold the parasites, Master. What say you of them?
They are thieves with weary eyelids
who steal the light from the steadfast children of the sun,
and make fair of the sap that runneth into their branches and their leaves."
그러자 꼬치꼬치 캐묻기를 좋아하는 제자인 마누스가 자신의 주변을 둘러보다가
무화과나무까지 뻗어나간 꽃이 피어있는 식물들을 보고 말했다.
"스승님 저 기생식물들을 보십시오.
저것들에 대해서 무엇이라고 말씀하시겠습니까?
저 기생식물들은 권태로운 눈꺼풀로
확고하게 뿌리내린 태양의 아들인 나무로부터 빛을 훔치고
나뭇가지와 잎으로 흘러 들어가는 많은 수액(樹液) 훔쳐먹는 도둑들입니다."
And he answered him saying:
"My friend, we are all parasites.
We who labour to turn the sod into pulsing life are not above
those who receive life directly from the sod without knowing the sod.
그가 제자에게 대답해 말했다.
"내 친구여, 우리는 모두 기생하는 자이니라.
비록 우리가 이 땅을 맥박치는 삶의 땅으로 만들기 위해 땀을 흘린다고 하여도
그렇다고 해서 이 땅에 대해 전혀 알지 못하고
땅으로부터 직접적으로 목숨을 받는 것들보다 위에 있지는 않노라.
"Shall a mother say to her child: 'I give you back to the forest,
which is your greater mother, for you weary me, heart and hand'?
"Or shall the singer rebuke his own song, saying:
'Return now to the cave of echoes from whence you came,
for your voice consumes my breath'?
"And shall the shepherd say to his yearling:
'I have no pasture whereunto I may lead you;
therefore be cut off and become a sacrifice for this cause'?
"Nay, my friend, all these things are answered
even before they are asked,
and, like your dreams, are fulfilled ere you sleep.
그 어떤 어머니가 자신의 아들에게
"나는 네가 내 몸과 마음을 지치게 하기에
너를 너의 위대한 어머니인 숲으로 되돌려보내 죽게 하리라." 라고 말하겠는가.
그리고 어떤 가수가 자신의 노래를 비난하면서
"너의 소리는 내 숨결을 소모시키기에
이제 너는 네가 왔던 곳인 메아리의 동굴로 되돌아 가버려라." 라고 말하겠는가.
또한 그 어떤 양치기가 그의 어린양에게
"나는 이제 너를 먹이러 데리고 갈 풀밭이 더 이상 없으니
죽어서 제물이나 되어버려라."라고 말하겠는가.
아니라오, 내 친구여,
이런 모든 일들은 오히려 그들이 묻기도 전에 답이 정해져있고,
그대의 꿈처럼 그대가 잠들기 전에 채워진다.
"We live upon one another according to the law, ancient and timeless.
Let us live thus in loving-kindness.
We seek one another in our aloneness,
and we walk the road when we have no hearth to sit beside.
우리는 오래되고 영원한 법칙에 따라 서로서로 기대어 살아간다.
그러니 우리는 자비로운 사랑 속에서 살아가야 한다.
우리는 우리의 외로움 속에서 서로 서로를 찾아야 하며,
곁에 앉을 따뜻한 난로가 없다면 우리는 길을 떠나야 한다.
"My friends and my brothers, the wider road is your fellow-man.
내 친구 그리고 형제들이여,
넓은 길이란 바로 그대들의 동료인 사람들이다.
"These plants that live upon the tree
draw milk of the earth in the sweet stillness of night,
and the earth in her tranquil dreaming sucks at the breast of the sun.
나무에 기대어 사는 이 식물들은
달콤한 밤의 정적 속에서 대지로부터 젖을 빨아들이고,
대지는 그녀의 평온한 꿈속에서 태양의 젖가슴을 빤다.
"And the sun, even as you and I and all there is,
sits in equal honour at the banquet of the Prince
whose door is always open and whose board is always spread.
"Mannus, my friend, all there is lives always upon all there is;
and all there is lives in the faith, shoreless,
upon the bounty of the Most High."
그리고 태양은 언제나 문이 활짝 열려있고 잔치상이 늘 마련되어있는
왕자의 연회처럼 그대와 나 그리고 여기에 있는 모든 것들에게
차별없이 은혜를 베푼다.
마누스, 나의 친구여,
살아서 존재하는 모든 것들은 항상 존재하는 다른 모든 것에 의지해서 살아간다.
그리고 살아서 존재하는 모든 것들은
가장 높으신 분의 관대함에 대한 끝없는 믿음 속에서 살아가는 것이다.

And on a morning when the sky was yet pale with dawn,
they walked all together in the Garden
and looked unto the East
and were silent in the presence of the rising sun.
하늘이 아직 완전히 밝아오지 않아 어스름으로 덮인 아침,
그들은 모두 동쪽을 바라보며 함께 정원을 거닐고 있었고
잠시 후 떠오르는 태양을 바라보며 그들은 침묵하며 서있었다.
And after a while Almustafa pointed with his hand, and said:
"The image of the morning sun in a dewdrop is not less than the sun.
The reflection of life in your soul is not less than life.
"The dewdrop mirrors the light because it is one with light,
and you reflect life because you and life are one.
그리고 얼마쯤 지난 뒤에 알무스타파는
아침 햇빛을 받아 빛나는 이슬방울을 손으로 가리키며 말했다.
"이슬방울 속에 맺힌 아침해의 모습도 태양 못지 않구나.
그리고 이 이슬방울처럼 그대들의 영혼 속에 투사되어 있는
생명의 모습도 참다운 생명에 견주어 보다 못하지 않구나.
이처럼 이슬방울은 빛과 하나가 되었기에 빛을 받아 반짝이고
너희는 생명과 하나이기에 그 생명을 반사하여 비추는 존재인 것이다.
"When darkness is upon you, say:
'This darkness is dawn not yet born;
and though night's travail be full upon me,
yet shall dawn be born unto me even as unto the hills.'
그러므로 어둠이 그대들 위로 덮쳐올 때면 이렇게 말하라.
"이 어둠은 아직 깨어나지 못한 나의 여명(黎明)이다.
그리고 비록 지금은 밤의 고통이 나를 가득 채우고 있다 하더라도
언덕 너머로 아침이 밝아오듯 이제 곧 나에게도 아침이 밝아 올 것이다."
"The dewdrop rounding its sphere in the dusk of the lily
is not unlike yourself gathering your soul in the heart of God.
백합 위의 이슬방울은
그 잎에 묻어있던 먼지로 인해 둥글게 맺히는 것처럼,
하느님의 가슴속으로 그대들의 영혼을 모으는
그대들 자신도 그 백합과 전혀 다를 바 없는 것이다.
"Shall a dewdrop say:
'But once in a thousand years I am a dewdrop,'
speak you and answer it saying:
'Know you not that the light of all the years is shining in your circle?' "
그러나 이슬방울이 말하기를,
"하지만 나는 천년 전 그때에도 단지 이슬방울이었을 뿐이다." 라고
그대에게 말한다면 너희는 이렇게 말하라.
"모든 세월들 속의 빛이 그대의 순환(循環) 안에서 빛나고 있음을 그대는 모르는가?"
